Shepherdstown is the oldest incorporated city in the state of West Virginia and the town has been well-preserved and protected - a true blend of amazing history and modern wonders! Many of the buildings in the town were built before the Revolutionary War, and we have our own monument overlooking the Potomac River honoring James Rumsey, a colleague of George Washington and the first man to pilot a steam-powered vessel. Stop by the Historic Shepherdstown Museum at the Entler Hotel for a look back in our history and a view of the half-scale replica of Rumsey's steamboat.
Shepherdstown offers riveting festivals of the performing arts, like the nationally-acclaimed
Contemporary American Theater Festival, and lively music and crafts events throughout the year. Parades down German Street happen for many holidays, both major and minor ones. Some of our pubs and cafes feature live music or open mic nights throughout the year. Every Thursday night you can enjoy Appalachian heritage music at O'Hurley's General Store in the Great Hall, featuring local musicians and starting around 7:30 p.m.
The Shepherdstown Opera House shows the best in independent films Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, serving popcorn with real butter! Christmas in Shepherdstown is always delightful with a tree lighting, parade and visits from Santa. You're sure to enjoy all of it - check our events calendar for specifics.
